Summary of ALL plans

 

 

Ø      40 of the 76 have been approved by the Commissioner:

§         33 alternative plans – no voter approval required

§         7 reorganization plans – voter approval required

(3 have been approved by voters; 4 must go to voters for final approval)

 

Ø      Of the 36 plans still in progress:

§         11 reorganization plans have recently been submitted to DOE and are awaiting either review by the Department or revisions by the regional planning committees.

§         24 additional reorganization plans are in progress

§         1 additional alternative plan is in progress

 

(Based on the 9 groups of school systems/individual units currently in unapproved configurations)

 

 

Alternative plans (34 total)

 

(Alternative plan school administrative units must show how they will reorganize functions to find savings in non-classroom areas while preserving quality programming in the classroom.)

 

·        33 alternative plans have been approved by the Commissioner

·        DOE is awaiting one more alternative plan

 

Reorganization plans (42 approved by the Commissioner or in progress)

 

·         3 reorganization plans have been approved by the Commissioner and the voters in the affected communities
Includes RSU #1 (Bath region), created via private/special law before passage of the Reorganization Law.

·        4 reorganization plans have been approved by the Commissioner and are pending approval by voters

·        11 reorganization plans are in hand at DOE, awaiting either review by the Department or revisions by the regional planning commitetes

·         24 other reorganization plans in progress
Based on information from the regional planning committees, we anticipate another 14 plans to come in during September and October, and the remainder to come in during November and December.

 

Exempt SAUs (11)

 

8 island school administrative units and 3 Maine Indian Education units are exempt from the requirement to reorganize but must file an alternative plan. Six of the eight islands have approved alternative plans at this time. The Indian Education schools and two island school systems are working on their plans.  The 76 to 79 anticipated plans above do not include the exempt school systems.
